Flashback 1.1 Submitted

posted by Stuart * 32 comments

Flashback 1.1 has been handed to the powers that be, and we’re confident it’s a big improvement over the 1.0 release.  We spent a lot of time gathering your feedback from every corner of the web, be it forums, twitter, blogs, reviews, comments and the rest, which is classified.

In summary, the 1.1 update includes the following enhancements:

  • Full Screen Mode (stretched 3:2 ratio)
    • This is the default now
  • Revised and significantly improved controls.  Full screen is great, but even the ‘game in a shell in a phone’ mode has improvements
  • Detailed in-game help - you’ll find this in the slide-out panel under the ‘Help’ tab.
  • Help overlay for controls - when you tap the ITEMS button, a [HELP] button appears to get quick help
  • Auto-rotate for left / right landscape (for Touch users, as some asked that it work both ways)
  • Restart game - again found in the slide-out panel

and bug fixes

  • Fixed the job details issue on Level 2

Obligatory screen shots

The ITEMS target area is much bigger than the image, so it is not difficult to hit.

I seen your post on toucharcade. Nice work getting this out so quick. Can’t wait to try it. Please put another world out as fast as possible!!!

can you please give the option to flip the controls?  The buttons are on the LEFT? which means your joystick has to be on the right, (even though it centers under your finger you can’t control on the left and have buttons on the left.  An option to be able to drag the buttons anywhere on the screen would be ideal.  then you can supply the buttons and the user can supply the layout they are comfortable with.  (Exactly like Wolfenstein from ID did the layout, user defined).

Commented 14.05.2009 By Stuart

Zurie, that is absolutely our primary goal for the 1.2 update (and probably nothing else).  We just ran out of time as with the Job bug out there, we didn’t want to hold off any longer.

Are you okay if we only do it for “full screen” mode, or do you want it for the 1:1 view also?

A you can see, the buttons for full screen are not directional, so it’s just the layout that needs to change.  If you want 1:1 updated too, we’ll have to redo portions of the game art, which will take longer.

Come guys, get this game sorted… This smacks of an extremely poor, rushed port. How could you destroy this game, it deserves to be treated with a lot more care & attention than what’s on offer here… Even with the 1.1 “fix” it’s still unplayable. Delphine Software will surely be turning in their graves.
This is an epic fail, roll on updates 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5… your bound to get it right eventually.

Agent_Zero: How can you complain about the 1.1 build if it hasn’t even hit iTunes yet? The only version available as of 05/15/09 is the 1.0 version. Am I missing something?

Commented 16.05.2009 By Anthony

He clearly has made a mistake , 1.1 is still awaiting approval

Commented 16.05.2009 By Stuart

Yes, we’ll definitely post when the 1.1 update goes live.

@Anthony, as much as we would love to bring Another World to the device, Eric Chahi maintains the rights, and rightfully decides if and when it will make it to the device.  I’d say more emphasis on the when…

Commented 16.05.2009 By Anthony

I understand that , I just remember reading that you guys already have it running on the Ipod but maybe I misread that. Anyway I am sure it would sell pretty well and it would be a first day buy for me.

What a great news ! I was stuck in level 2 because the job details weren’t displayed. And I wasn’t able to remember what I had to do. This is a very great port with few minor bugs. Thanks !

As I said before, the 1.1 update doesn’t address the issues with the poorly conceived control scheme, I don’t need to reiterate that control is key to a game like this. The only minor improvements I can see are to the graphical interface but this is purely cosmetic & does not help to pull this game from it’s version 1.0 woe. As it stands much more improvement is needed to bring this game to it’s former glory.

1.1, where do I start? Unfortunately with the negative, Still the controls are a nightmare & counter productive! Really Manomio this is a discrace & a tardy port! this is not the award winning Amiga excellence I was hoping for… I feel duped!

Hmm u idiots can’t read eh? The 1.1 update still hasn’t been released to the public yet..

@Agent_Zero @Out_Loud - Guys, the controls HAS been resolved and they´re really working fantastic now. The 1.1 update IS NOT OUT YET, it´s submitted to appstore, and Apple has to approve it before it can be downloaded (yes, it´s a stupid procedure, but what can I do wink).

Commented 19.05.2009 By Agent_Zero

Hi Stuart,
Yes it is out, I’ve been on 1.1 for a few days now. I really do feel though that you’ve still got a lot of work to do to bring this up to spec. I hope your not thinking that you can move on & leave this where it’s at. I’m not wantimg to sound mean, really! But you’ve picked a really important retro title to port & it deserves to be treated better.

Commented 20.05.2009 By Jeff

And how would you improve the controls? I’m playing it now and I don’t see much they could do to improve it. Well ok they could improve it, but that would be changing the control setup from the original game, which was always kind of funky to begin with.

The only thing I think they should fix is I don’t understand why there’s diagonal movement on the d-pad when from what I understand diagonal movement was never used, and all it does it make it more difficult to jump.

It’s worth pointing out that, as of writing, this update has been submitted to but not approved by Apple. Assuming all goes smoothly, though, Flashback may have become a better prospect than it was in its first iPhone incarnation.

What are you talking about? 1.1 was submitted in may of 2009 and was approved but did not fix the controls nearly enough to make the game playable. Fighting the controls is the hardest part of the game the way it is right now. Try running and jumping for instance.
